Former Secretary Of State Colin Powell delivered some harsh words for the GOP as a whole on Sunday.
In an appearance on NBC's "Meet The Press," Powell noted that there is a "dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party."
"What do I mean by that?," he explained. "What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities."
TPL took a break after the elections. It was a given that the Right-wing would push all the way to the fiscal cliff probably betting that President Obama would cave in. He did not thankfully, and a last minute deal was worked. We should assume a continued dysfunctional Congress with the House Republicans continuing to say no to any Obama initiative. That said, we can also expect that President Obama and the Democrats will stand more firm on key issues. The economy should continue to get better slowly but surely. As for Latinos, the Democrats, we believe will not take their support for granted. Immigration will very likely be a 2013 agenda. President Obama is already indicating he is pushing for legislation in this month, quicker than TPL thought given the economic challenges with the upcoming debt ceiling and sequestration events to deal with. The outlook is one of guarded optimism for Latinos. We can however count on the Extreme Right-wing to continue to step on it making it easier to enable immigration and get the Dream Act into law. Even Colin Powell and admired national figure who is a Republican has his problems with the party. See his interview on Meet The Press. He characterizes his party as one of intolerance.
