According to the Huffingtom Post, “Alabama state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin (R) is pushing legislation that would impose restrictions on abortion clinics -- a move that she argues is necessary because the procedure is a major surgery that removes the largest "organ" in a woman's body.” What she means by this is a baby. Yes you read correctly - yet another Right wing nut like Todd Akin (the “legitimate rape” talk) saying crazy things. What is not so crazy is that there are many out there that will go along and others that will not get involved. Latinos do you want this? Do you want to be part of this kind of thinking? Take note that Rubio on hearing of the President’s immigration proposal said it was dead on arrival. Do we get to hear him say this about the baby being the largest organ in the body? Don’t hold your breath! TPL (www.theprogressivelatino.com) Like us on Facebook.
There is much buzz going one regarding Obamacare. For all the goodness in Obamacare the Republican Right wing zealots are determined to repeal it even though they have yet to tell the American people what they would replace it with. Some on the Right are so hypocritical that while they vow to repeal Obamacare they are actively taking advantage of some of its provisions most notably the one that allows parents to keep their kids on their health plan up through age 26. The HuffingtonPost noted that "Republicans include Sen. Bob Corker (TN), Rep. Joe Walsh (IL), and Sen. Scott Brown (MA). This has not stopped Republicans from calling for a full repeal, without proposing a viable alternative." ThinkProgress pointed to a study by the Commonwealth Fund, that "6.6 million young adults have signed up for coverage through their parents’ health insurance plans." Latinos this is 6.6 million young adults that have health care directly due to the Obama's Affordable Health Care Act. They would all lose their health coverage if the Right wing totally repeals Obamacare as they are stating starting with Mitt!!! This is just mean spirited!! Why not look to amending Obamacare to make it better? The Right prefers to have you go without than to give any credit to Obama that is why!!! The Right is intent by all means to repeal or deny Obamacare. Note that several GOP governors have decided not to put their citizen's health care first but rather leave millions uninsured putting party first by not implementing Obamacare in their states. See ThinkProgress article and graphic at this link. What does this mean to you - Latino? Many Latinos live in the southern GOP states that will be denied Obamacare.
Both sides have their media - each pointing out faults of the other. They preach to a ready audience ready willing to believe whatever is put before them. This is why it is important to do our own homework as citizens, and vote with more than just hate or disappointment. This Friday, MSNBC's Rachael Maddow show presented a piece on the hypocrisy surrounding the health care mandate. You need to see this as it is based on through research not mindless accusations. The essence of the report was that the idea for the health mandate originated with the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank. The bottom line was that it was conceived as an alternative in opposition to the proposed Clinton Health Care plan. Republican leadership fully backed the mandate to include a penalty up through 2009. What changed in 2009? You guessed it - the Democrats introduced their health care plan with the mandate thinking that the Republicans would support the plan with the mandate - their idea. Note that President Obama did not want the mandate but went along looking for the middle ground, which we now can see looking back that there is none. Latinos require affordable health care and the mandate is the tool to make it affordable. The whole controversy or a mandate is flawed though well implemented by the right, which can take any position and aggressively market it. It is flawed because most of us already have employer-provided health care so those folks would be incompliance with the mandate. A March 2012 study by the Urban Institue concluded that "The “individual mandate”—the requirement that individuals either have health insurance coverage or pay a fine—is both the best known and the least popular component of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If the ACA were in effect today, 94 percent of the total population (93% of the nonelderly population) or 250.3 million people out of 268.8 million—would not face a requirement to newly purchase insurance or pay a fine." Those 40 million or so that don't have it - well most don't have it because they choose not to - they just can't afford it and if they are employed; work for someone that does not offer it. That leaves a small percentage that choose not to have it - very small. These are the folks that would be mandated and it is not like they will be told to pay for the most expensive plan. They will be able to chose a basic plan that is less expensive or pay the penalty if they feel it would be cheaper, which is unlikely. So all this Latino to help you understand with facts that you will get what you vote (or if you don't even vote) for. A president that has fought to ensure all have health insurance or a presidential-wanna-be that wants to repeal the whole health care act, and has yet to provide us details of what he would put in place - the same guy that used that mandate in his state, and whose only argument today is that it is not for the Federal government to use a mandate. Think about the logic or lack thereof in that. Inform others of this video. Vote informed and do vote Latino. Read the study report under Key Documentsat TPL"s www.theprogressivelatino.com

TPL will have more to say about President Obama's Affordable Health Care. This site - Stand Up for Health Care provides very easy to understand description of the Affordable Health Care Act. Latinos stand to benefit. The "mandate" has become a major distraction which the Supreme Court will address starting Monday. TPL
The Republican War on Women has been made quite clear over the past few weeks with the issue of contraception being masqueraded by the Right-wing as a religious freedom issue. Make no mistake Latinas - they are out to control your right to chose and use contraceptives. Limbaugh thinks you are a slut and a prostitute for wanting to use contraceptives. Meanwhile President Obama has been on your side on this issue. See the War on Women AD. With regards to Latino views on contraception, according to Latino Decisions, "Regardless of nativity, the vast majority of Latinos and and Latinas strongly agree women should earn equal pay and have easy access to contraception." True to Republican ideology, Mitt Romney recently proposed the voucher system for both veterans health and for Medicare. Many Latinos are Veterans and Medicare is there for health care for our senior citizens, which as the years go by will increasingly be Latinos. So study carefully the right's plan to dismantle government programs in the name of pure ideology that all things private sector are superior to any government programs. Ideology however, will not take care of you when the time comes for much needed health care. Our Veterans represent a different 1%. They are that 1 % that take care for our freedom so that the other 99% can live their lives as they wish. Government health care is one tax we should all give freely. With less than 4 % support Nation-wide, Bachmann, who has a history of inaccurate statements threw out another one, last night at the Republican debate. Her view is that the programs initiated under President Johnson's "Great Society" are socialist - more socialist than China, which by the way is still a communist (read socialist) country. Having programs that serve as a safety net for millions of Americans does not make for a socialist nation. This has been a tactic of the Right-wing to paint democrats as socialist. The programs we are talking about are Social Security, Medicare and Food Stamps. She states that China does not have food stamps. China also has millions in abject poverty. Just keep in mind that even while her comments are absurd what is worst is her that she says she is a supporter of Medicare and Social Security. Read the details in the Talking Point Memo article by Benjy Sarlin at: http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/11/bachmann-america-should-be-more-like-china.php?ref=fpb
President Obama introduced the "Buffet Plan" which calls for closing of tax loopholes that allows millionaires to end up paying less in taxes than a secretary. The Republicans have done nothing but criticize Obama. The hypocrisy of this is clear when you go back to when Ronald Reagan was President. He himself spoke to the same problem. So why when President Obama calls for the same as President Reagan is it now not a good idea? As with every other Obama proposal - the Republicans say no to without hesitation. It is all about opposing any Obama initiative at the expense of the American middle, lower class. See this video if you don't believe TPL: http://youtu.be/cgbJ-Fs1ikA.
Nancy Pelosi in the Daily KOS provides a good desciption of the Republican agaend regarding their 2010 Budget. As has been reported in vaious media this is aimed at further institutionalizing the Republican anti-social, anti-compassionate agenda by eliminating Medicare and cuting several other programs aimed at helping those Americans in need. Latinos, Medicare works and is a very imporatant benefit that many seniors will not be able to have with Republican vouchers and privitizations schemes.
This is a superb article that describes, " 5 Benefits The Hispanic Community Stands To Lose If Congress Repeals Health Care Reform" See their aticle at (at http://democracia-ahora.org/health_care_and_latinos/). The health care law enacted by the Obama administraion is the first major overhaul in years. It is now the perfect plan but it provides several benefits that would not exist otherwise. The conservative agenda to repeal and not fund the new health care law is misguided and uncaring. Get informed Latinos. Health care is today and will be a major agenda item for the 2012 election. We need to back the progressive agenda that calls for improved health care for all Americans.
